Ajax Blyth Piper graduated from University of the Arts London and has been working as a muralist on England's south coast since 2018. His pieces read like narrative snapshots — figures you might know, palettes tuned to the neighborhood they live in. He also designs typefaces, and the same attention to letterform runs through the mural work.

Artwork Q&A / After the rain

In the artist's words.

Ajax Piper on After the rain.

What inspired or frustrated you when creating these pieces?

Like much of my work, I was inspired by shapes and colours found in nature.

The small format was challenging, as I tend to want to include a lot of narrative detail.

What excites you most about creating in this new medium and being part of the project?

I love how the light interacts with the piece, allowing lighter values to glow through the surface.

It feels special to be part of a community of artists contributing to such a unique project.

What do you want people to feel when they hold or experience your work?

I want people to feel a sense of calm and a connection to nature.

My work invites the viewer to pause and step outside their usual thoughts.

Who or what are your main inspirations and influences?

I’m inspired by artists like Sorolla, Mucha, Klimt, and Repin, to name a few, as well as many contemporary muralists.

My work also draws extensively from observing nature and transforming its forms, colours, and rhythms.
